When you thought of studying abroad, you might have considered Canada, UK or Australia. You might have thought of Dubai for business or tourism. But the UAE? It may not be one of the first options that come to mind.
2026 is a different story. The UAE has made a concerted effort over the last five years to develop the region into a global education hub. From an Indian student’s perspective, the UAE has presented itself as an attractive alternative educational destination with numerous benefits.
The UAE’s Education Index is 0.802 – the highest in the Arab world – compared to Saudi Arabia’s 0.78, Kuwait’s 0.638, and Jordan’s 0.667. The UAE has earmarked 16% of its federal government spending for education and recorded a literacy rate of 98.29% as of 2022. The UAE is set to make education a strategic priority in the years to come.
The UAE’s Vision 2030 seeks to invest significantly in technology, healthcare, renewable energy, finance, and logistics. Companies considering the region for their regional headquarters are already hiring graduates, making the UAE an attractive destination for higher studies.
The UAE hosts world-class educational institutions in its own right such as New York University, Abu Dhabi, American University of Sharjah and Khalifa University. In addition, the UAE’s academic cities host dozens of universities from other countries such as the British, American, Australian, and Indian education systems. Students can earn the same qualifications as if they were to study in the country of the teaching university.
Post-study work rights – competitive and easy to obtain: The UAE has launched a post-graduation work visa that allows graduates to stay and work in the UAE for two years for a bachelor’s degree and three years for a master’s or PhD.
Scholarships – readily available: The UAE government and universities offer a variety of scholarships to international students who meet certain financial and academic criteria. AUS alone touts 17 different scholarship and grant programs for undergraduate and postgraduate studies. This can ease the financial burden on middle-class Indian students seeking to study abroad considerably.
Easy visa process: Compared to Canada’s multi-step, multi-agency process for obtaining a Post-Graduation Work Permit, obtaining a student visa and subsequently a work visa in the UAE is comparatively simple. A student’s university serves as the student’s visa sponsor once they receive an admission letter.
Proximity – A significant draw for parents and students who want to minimize the distance between home and abroad: Flights from Dubai to Mumbai take about three hours, while flights from Abu Dhabi take about 3.5 hours. Round trips can be made within 4 hours. This proximity can be a strong reassurance to parents who worry about their child studying too far away. Furthermore, the UAE hosts a large Indian community and is generally welcoming to Indians. Hindi is widely spoken and understood, Indian food is readily available, and Indians can easily find places of Indian origin such as temples and mosques. There is no culture shock.
Education in English – No need to learn Arabic to study there: Most programs offered by the UAE and its academic cities are conducted in English. Students are not required to learn Arabic to gain admission or pursue studies. AUS, for instance, is among the top 18% of the world’s best universities and top 3% of the best universities in the Arab world, according to QS 2026. The university boasts 11 consecutive years of being among the world’s top universities for diversity and features students and faculty from more than 100 different countries.
Cost – Affordable compared to what other destinations have to offer: Average tuition fees in the UAE range from AED 37,500 to AED 75,000 per semester (approximately ₹8.5-17 lakhs). This may seem expensive for an Indian student, but many universities offer scholarships. Additionally, students can offset some of the costs by working up to 20 hours per week (on a student visa). Compared to what similar universities charge in Canada, the UAE can be a viable option for someone seeking a globally recognized education at a competitive price, with competitive post-graduation work rights.
Job Opportunities in the UAE: The UAE’s 2030 Vision makes it a hotspot for jobs in technology, healthcare, renewable energy, finance, and logistics. The UAE is home to thousands of companies such as Emirates, ADNOC, DP World, and countless multinational company regional headquarters. Graduates will find a variety of job opportunities in their field of study. Some universities even encourage students to pursue internships at local companies as a way to gain experience and make connections.
American University of Sharjah: Ranked among the top 18% of the world’s best universities and top 3% of the best universities in the Arab world, according to QS 2026. AUS offers high-quality education in business, engineering, and architecture and is known as #1 in employer reputation in the UAE.
Khalifa University (Abu Dhabi): One of the highest-ranked public research universities in the UAE, offering full scholarships to qualifying students. Students are encouraged to pursue studies in STEM fields, with specialties in AI, aerospace, biomedical sciences, and engineering.
University of Dubai: Offers programs tailored for students interested in pursuing ACCA qualifications and a career in business and accounting in the Middle East.
NYU Abu Dhabi: One of the world’s top universities, offering need-blind admissions and generous financial aid to international students.
Heriot-Watt University UAE, University of Wollongong UAE (through DIAC): Offers internationally recognized degrees at a fraction of the cost of studying on-campus.
While the UAE has many benefits as a study destination, students should also be aware of the following considerations.
Cost of Living: Accommodation in Dubai and Abu Dhabi can be expensive. Many students choose to live in shared housing with roommates in Sharjah or elsewhere. While dormitory-style accommodation offered by many universities can be cheaper, it may also be more cramped and uncomfortable than private alternatives.
Hot Weather: Summers in the UAE are hot and humid, with temperatures regularly reaching 40C or higher. While some may find this weather to be pleasant, students who are used to hot weather in India may find the heat to be overwhelming.
Permanent Residency Pathway: While the UAE offers a variety of ways to gain permanent residency, it may not be as straight forward as the points system used by the Canadian Express Entry system.
Not all universities are the same: As with any country, there is a wide variety of universities that differ in terms of quality of education, resources, and opportunities. Choose a program and university that fit your needs and research the university’s recognition in your home country. Always verify with the UAE Ministry of Education that your chosen university is legally authorized to provide educational services before applying.
The UAE has become a popular study destination for a wide variety of international students, including Indians, due to its strong focus on education and investment in the sector. The UAE has recognized the importance of nurturing the youth and has taken significant steps to ensure students can pursue their educational and professional goals. As such, the UAE presents an excellent opportunity for Indian students looking to study outside of India.
Whether Canada’s system makes you hesitant, the cost of the UK is prohibitive, or the distance of Australia is too far, the UAE should be a viable option for you in 2026. Do your research and due diligence on the specific university programs that interest you. However, always remember to consider the UAE for your 2026 study abroad plans.
