What is demanded during an admission interview from a student to brief his achievements in a humble manner rather than being conceited?

Taking admission into dream universities is not solely about your previous academics but also depends on your performance during an interview. Many students find it difficult to confidently showcase their achievements without coming out as boastful. The struggle point comes to balance between confidence and humility during the interview.

During interviews in general, focus is on ones confidence, problem solving and social understanding. So speak honestly and in detail about what one has done and would like to do, how you have developed and whether you like to learn independently or in a team. Don’t emphasize presenting your intelligence because the interviewer wants to know what is not presented in the mark sheets.

But while doing self promotion without seeming arrogant, there are a few tips that will help you to shine in your interview.

While listing your achievements, highlight the learning and personal development behind your growth to get there and also acknowledge the role of mentors and peers during teamwork. Whenever it is possible, use specific numbers and percentages of your results. There is the STAR method; ‘Situation, Task, Action, Result’ will help you to concisely communicate your experience. When you explain your academics, try to connect to your future goals. The responses you tailor must be accordingly to the interviewer’s question so practice active listening and being engaged. Most important is that you must bring your portfolio to show your skills tangibly instead of mere words. Be genuine with your behavior and responses.

So be prepared to frame your achievements as a stepping stone rather than end goals; with this, you will come across as a motivated and growth oriented candidate. Admission officers want to understand your potential contribution to their campus community.
