Understand Canadian universities with new rules to consider as an option for higher education.

In today’s scenario, Indian students and parents are skeptical of keeping Canada in the list of choices as a study destination. But it will surprise you that Canada still holds the position as one of the most desired destinations by students pursuing quality higher education. More than 30 Canadian institutions appear in international university rankings, and the strength of the academic environment is diversified, with excellence and innovation going hand in hand.

Okay, so which are the top Canadian universities in the international arena?

The universities of Canada keep gaining an international reputation, with some of them claiming enviable rankings among the world’s top universities. We will segregate the universities into private and public categories for better understanding.

The University of Toronto, McGill University, and the University of British Columbia are always at the forefront, and this is the power of higher education in Canada in the international arena. They are complemented by other well-known universities such as the University of Alberta, the University of Waterloo, Western University, the Université de Montréal, McMaster University, Queen’s University and the University of Calgary. These seven universities complete the best 10 post-secondary institutions in Canada in 2025. This only adds to the fact that Canada is an educational juggernaut.

Outside the state institutions, the Canadian system of private universities also provides specialized academic education in accordance with a particular sphere and interests. Although these smaller institutions operate on a different scale, they are important in offering a variety of educational opportunities to the country and forming part of the holistic educational ecosystem. Always check for the universities and colleges on the DLIs list provided by the official body.

Let’s get to know the major policy changes in financial requirements that may or may not affect the decision. The international students who intend to study in Canada are on the verge of a new landscape. The Canadian government has raised the financial requirements of international students to CAD$22,895 compared to CAD$20,635. The increase, which will affect applicants who submit a study permit application on or after September 1, 2025, is one of a series of steps that IRCC announced in December 2023 to match inflation.

This significant rise is a manifestation of the fact that living costs have gone up in Canadian cities, and it is the initiative of the government to make sure that students can afford to take care of themselves in their course of their studies. This is an increase in response to the increasing cost of living in the country. The new requirement implies that single applicants are now required to prove that they will have CAD 22,895 of funds available to cover living expenses each year, not counting tuition fees and travelling expenses.

The financial requirements also vary according to family size. 2 family members wish to visit a province or territory (other than Quebec) on a year-long basis; you will require 31,583 as living expenses. In the case of a bigger family, the figures grow on a relative basis so that all the family members have sufficient funding once in Canada.

Separate Requirements of Quebec

The immigration ministry of Quebec has different financial demands for the students who intend to study in Quebec. These requirements are independently calculated and can vary from the federal requirements, which are applicable to other provinces and territories.

The presence of world-class universities in Canada, coupled with clearer, although more strict, financial requirements, further makes Canada a nation that will sustainably attract the best international students and equip them with the support mechanisms to succeed in their academic venture.
