The IELTS is expensive, stressful, and, for an Indian considering studying abroad, a nuisance.
At approximately Rs.17,000 (3000-4000 INR per attempt), a static 2h45m test, and test centers located only in major cities across India – the IELTS is an obstacle for many Indian students hoping to study abroad.
However, what few Indian students considering studying abroad realize is that the IELTS is no longer the only option.
The English testing space has evolved significantly over the past 2 years, with Duolingo English Testing (DET), PTE, TOEFL, and even English-medium waivers being accepted by thousands of universities across the world.
In this post, we will be looking at:
So, without further ado, let’s jump right into the main event!
Perhaps one of the most significant disruptions to the established IELTS/TOEFL duopoly, the Duolingo English Test boasts features unlike the other English exams available:
The test has had a boon due to the pandemic – with most test centers being shut down, thereby necessitating the need for an online test.
As such, the DET is currently accepted by 5,000+ universities across the world, including many prestigious universities.

Another popular alternative to IELTS is the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic. It has some similarities with IELTS:
Unlike the IELTS, however, the speaking test in PTE Academic is computer-based (there is no human examiner). As such, it is a popular choice among Indian students. It is also accepted by thousands of universities across the world including most UK, Australian, and Canadian universities.
The U.S. is the most accommodating in terms of English language exams.
This includes:
The Key Takeaway – The U.S. is the easiest major destination (amongst the U.S., U.K., Canada, Ireland, Australia, and Germany) in terms of language exams.
While most U.S. universities accept DET, it is a mixed bag in the U.K.:
| Universities Accepting DET | Universities Not Accepting DET |
|---|---|
| London School of Economics (LSE) | University of Oxford |
| Imperial College London | University of Cambridge |
| Kingston University | Lancaster University |
| University of Southampton | |
| Middlesex University |
The Key Takeaway – While most British universities accept DET, it is better to double-check with your target universities before taking DET. Some of the most prestigious universities (Oxford, Cambridge, Lancaster, etc.) do not accept DET.
DET Goes Beyond Just University Admissions
Perhaps one of the most significant developments in recent times is that DET is now accepted by the Irish government as part of the visa process.
What this means is:
The Key Takeaway – Ireland is now a very attractive option for Indian students who want to study abroad – as DET is accepted both for university admissions and visa purposes.
While the majority of Canadian universities accept DET, for the Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa, you will need either IELTS General Training or Academic.
The Key Takeaway – For most Canadian universities, DET, PTE, or TOEFL are acceptable. However, be wary of the visa processing requirements (especially for the SDS visa).
Similar to Canada, the majority of Australian universities accept PTE, but DET acceptance is a mixed bag.
The Key Takeaway – PTE Academic is the preferred English language test for Australian universities (accepted for both visa and university admissions). TOEFL is also accepted for admissions, although not always for visa purposes. IELTS is generally the accepted test for Australian visas.
For the most part, German-speaking countries are more accommodating towards Indian students when it comes to medium of instruction.
For example:
Another way around needing an English language test is to have studied at an English-medium institution. Most universities, especially those offering postgraduate courses, accept students from English-medium institutions without an additional English language test.
The Key Takeaway – Medium of instruction waivers are available in Germany at many universities. This means that students that have studied at an English-medium school or university do not need to take an additional English language test.
The majority of Singaporean universities accept either TOEFL or IELTS as proof of language proficiency.
The Key Takeaway – The top Singaporean universities (NTU, NUS) usually require TOEFL iBT or IELTS for admissions purposes.
Many universities across the globe offer an English-medium waiver to students hailing from English-medium schools or universities. This means you will not have to take an additional English language test.
This is not always applicable; you may need to contact the admissions office and confirm this before applying.
We recommend the Duolingo English Test (DET):
We recommend IELTS Academic:
We recommend IELTS Academic:
We recommend the PTE Academic:
You can request an English-medium waiver.
Perhaps one of the best strategies we can recommend is to take the DET (it is the cheapest, fastest, and easiest test) and use the DET score to apply to DET-accepting universities.
If you do well on the DET (anything above a 120 means you are doing exceptionally well), then you may not need another English language test if the target university accepts DET.
However, if the university does not accept DET or you want to apply to a university that requires IELTS (specifically for the visa processing requirements for the U.K. and Canada), then you can take the IELTS.
The IELTS-duopoly is being disrupted: With the advent of the Duolingo English Test (DET) – a cheap (70 USD), fast (1 hour), and easy (results out in 48 hours) English language test, along with PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, and medium of instruction certificates – students have more options than ever before.
And the best students do not blindly apply for the IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE – they research the requirements for their target university and only apply for the English language test if the university requires it.
As such, the smarter students will choose the cheapest test (DET) for the majority of their applications and only take the IELTS if the university requires it (for visa processing in the U.K. or Canada).
Do not waste your time – or more importantly, your money – paying 17,000 INR for the IELTS if it is not required! Check out this blog for your target universities and see if they accept a cheap and easy DET!
